Pacific Wood

Pacific wood is very similar in looks to Malaysian Driftwood with a mix of Mopani wood. It is a dense wood that should sink within 3-4 days. Boiling the wood is always recommend and will help it to sink quicker.

You will be receiving one (1) piece of Pacific Driftwood that will be between 6 to 10 inches in length. All pieces of wood will be unique in shape with no more than 1 to 2 cut edges.

Key Features:

  • Essential for Shrimp Breeding
  • Creates Surface Area for Bio-film and Bacterial to Grow
  • Releases Beneficial Tannin into the Water which Simulates the Natural Habitat of Shrimp
  • Provides Hiding Places for Shrimp
  • Natural Feeding Ground for Shrimp of all Types

More Information:

When asked, “What is the most essential part to a successful shrimp tank?” we will always respond with three key factors: leaf matter, java moss, and a piece of driftwood. As far as driftwood goes, Malaysian driftwood is our number one choice yet there are plenty of other great options such as Mopani, Spider and Pacific wood.

The reason we use driftwood is because it creates surface area. What we mean is this, shrimp need places to hide, graze and sit on. By adding driftwood to an aquarium, one can more than double the surface area in a tank. The best thing about Pacific driftwood specifically is it is dark thus when all that algae we normally hate grows on it, we don’t know and can’t see it. Therefore, we won’t clean the algae off the driftwood so in return we are providing a natural and nearly unnoticeable food source for the shrimp. The final main benefit we see from using driftwood is the tannins it releases. These tannins leach from the driftwood into the water column carrying a multitude of antifungal and antibacterial properties. Although most people prefer clear aquarium water, here at Flip Aquatics we find that the slight discoloration adds character to the tank and allows the shrimp to feel more comfortable.
